CLEAR OPENING WIDTHS
Approved Document Part M of the Building Regulations declares that for Accessible and Adaptable Dwellings and for Wheelchair User Dwellings the Principal Communal Entrances should have a clear opening width of 850mm. Although it mentions that Visitable Dwellings can have a clear opening width of 775mm.
Our policy is to assume that all of our doors will be have the requirement of 850mm clear opening, unless otherwise advised.
Below is a diagram from Approved Document M showing how the measurement should be taken.
DOORS WITH MAGNETIC LOCKS
NEOS Protect Doors which are part of a controlled entry design will have magnetic locks. The magnets are concealed in a full height magnetic lock housing which has an effect on the clear opening width. Therefore the structural opening should be considered to allow for the magnetic lock housing.
with magnetic locks, the minimum structural opening must be 1155mm.
The nearest brick dimensions to meet the minimum 850mm clear opening with magnetic locks considered is 1248mm. This gives an actual clear opening of 968mm.
FOR DOOR WITH MAGNETIC LOCKS WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT ARCHITECTS USE THE STANDARD BRICK OPENING DIMENSION OF 1248mm
FOR DOORS WITH MECHANICAL LOCKS THE STANDARD BRICK OPENING OF 1135mm IS RECOMMENDED
